  17. This hybrid CD-ROM contains Acrobat Reader 3.0 installers (with and without 
  18. Acrobat Search) for Macintosh, Windows, and Unix. Here are the installation 
  19. instructions for each platform:

  21. Windows

  23. Run the SETUP.EXE program in the 16BIT (for Windows 3.x systems) or 32BIT 
  24. (for Windows 95 and NT systems) folder for the desired configuration:

  44. QuickTime installation is only required if you are viewing PDF files with linked
  45. QuickTime movies or sounds. See the README.WRI file in the QUICKTIM folder for 
  46. installation details.

  48. The DISKS folder contains the Acrobat Reader 3.0 installer files that may be 
  49. copied to empty, DOS-formatted HD floppy disks.

  53. Run the "Install Acrobat Reader 3.0" program in the "Reader" folder of the 
  54. desired configuration:

  75. QuickTime installation is only required if you are viewing PDF files with linked
  76. QuickTime movies or sounds. Most likely, your Macintosh system already has 
  77. QuickTime 2.0 or later installed, which is required to play back QuickTime 
  78. movies and sounds added to Portable Document Format (PDF) files.

  80. Installation of the OLE plug-in is only required if you need to view PDF 
  81. documents embedded as OLE objects in another application, such as Lotus Notes.

  104. Distributing the Acrobat Reader Installers
  105. ===================================
  106. You may make and distribute unlimited copies of the Acrobat Reader or Acrobat 
  107. Reader + Search software on this CD-ROM, including copies for commercial 
  108. distribution, as long as each copy that you make and distribute includes the 
  109. following: 
  110.  
  111.    1. Acrobat Reader or Acrobat Reader + Search installer, as provided by Adobe;
  112.  
  113.    2. Acrobat Reader Electronic End User License Agreement;      
  114.     
  115.    3. Copyright and other proprietary notices included in Acrobat Reader; and 
  116.  
  117.    4. The following attribution statement on any media and packaging that 
  118.        includes Acrobat Reader: "Acrobat(R) Reader copyright (C) 1987-1997 
  119.        Adobe Systems Incorporated. All rights reserved. Adobe and Acrobat are 
  120.        trademarks of Adobe Systems Incorporated."

  122. You are expressly prohibited from modifying the Acrobat Reader installer program
  123. provided by Adobe or creating your own installer for the Acrobat Reader 
  124. software. You may, however, customize the Acrobat Reader installer as described 
  125. in "Customizing the Acrobat Reader Installers" below. If you distribute the 
  126. Acrobat Reader installers as provided on this CD-ROM or customize them as 
  127. described below, you will be in compliance with item 1 above.

  129. The Acrobat Reader Electronic End User License Agreement, copyright notices, and
  130. proprietary notices are contained in the Acrobat Reader installer program. If 
  131. you distribute one of the Acrobat Reader installers provided on this CD-ROM you 
  132. will be in compliance with items 2 and 3 above. Details on the terms of use for 
  133. the Acrobat Reader products are found in the Acrobat Reader Electronic End User 
  134. License Agreement presented during installation.

  136. You may not distribute the Search or QuickTime installer components separately; 
  137. they must be distributed along with an Acrobat Reader installer. Adobe Systems 
  138. Incorporated has licensed QuickTime for Macintosh and Windows to incorporate 
  139. in Adobe products, including Acrobat Reader. You may make copies of QuickTime 
  140. only as incorporated for use with Acrobat Reader. Any distribution of QuickTime 
  141. apart from the Acrobat Reader is subject to the restrictions specified by Apple 
  142. Computer, Inc.

  144. There is not a Reader + Search installer that will fit on HD floppy disks.
  145.  
  146. Acrobat Reader Installers for Unix
  147. ==================================
  148. ACROREAD/UNIX/READER - This directory contains files for installing Acrobat
  149. Reader onto the following platforms: SunOS, Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, IRIX, Digital
  150. UNIX, or LINUX. A single installation script senses what platform's components
  151. are present and lists those platforms as choices. The required files are the
  152. following:
  153.  
  154.     INSTGUID.TXT    The Reader installation guide
  155.     INSTALL        The installation script
  156.     LICREAD.TXT     The End-User License Agreement which is required by the 
  157.               installation script
  158.     READ.TAR    The platform-independent files (on-line documentation, 
  159.                     fonts, etc.).This file is required by the installation 
  160.                     script.
  161.  
  162. The following files contain the platform-dependent components. If you do not
  163.  want to distribute the Reader installation for a particular platform, such as 
  164.  Solaris, then do not inlcude that platform's file in the same directory as 
  165.  the other components of the installer.
  166.  
  167.     AIXR.TAR    The AIX platform-specific files
  168.     AOSFR.TAR    The Digital UNIX platform-specific files
  169.     HPUXR.TAR    The HP-UX platform-specific files
  170.     ILINXR.TAR    The LINUX platform-specific files
  171.     IRIXR.TAR    The IRIX platform-specific files
  172.     SSOLR.TAR    The Solaris platform-specific files
  173.     SSUNR.TAR    The SunOS platform-specific files
  174.  
  175. For example, to include the Reader installer for only AIX, the following files 
  176. are needed in the same directory:
  177.  
  178.     INSTGUID.TXT
  179.     INSTALL
  180.     LICREAD.TXT

  184. ACROREAD/UNIX/RDR_SRCH - This directory contains the above listed files plus 
  185. files specific for Acrobat Search. The additional files are:
  186.  
  187.     SEARCH.TAR    The platform-independent files for Acrobat Search
  188.     AIXS.TAR    The AIX platform-specific Search files
  189.     AOSFS.TAR    The Digital UNIX platform-specific files
  190.     HPUXS.TAR    The HP-UX platform-specific Search files
  191.     IRIXS.TAR    The IRIX platform-specific Search files
  192.     SSOLS.TAR    The Solaris platform-specific Search files
  193.     SSUNS.TAR    The SunOS platform-specific Search files
  194.  
  195. For example, to include the Acrobat Reader + Search installer for HP-UX, the 
  196. following files need to be in the same directory:

  207. Re-use of Acrobat Reader 3.0 Documentation
  208. ======================================
  209. You may copy and re-use text and illustrations from any or all of the Acrobat 
  210. Reader documentation (including Online Guides and ReadMe files) in your own 
  211. publications associated with the distribution of Acrobat Reader 3.0 software. 
  212. If you do so, you must include the following attribution line: "Some portions 
  213. copyrighted to and reprinted with permission from Adobe Systems Incorporated."

  216. Customizing the Acrobat Reader Installers
  217. =========================================
  218. You may customize the Acrobat Reader installers to install additional files 
  219. such as plug-ins and help files. You cannot change the components that are 
  220. built into the Acrobat Reader installer and its archives. 
  221.  
  222. Windows -- The Acrobat Reader installers for Windows have the ability to copy 
  223. files that are external to the installer application and archives. To trigger 
  224. the blind-copy mechanism, a file named ABCPY.INI (Adobe Blind CoPY 
  225. initialization file) must exist in the same folder as the installer program 
  226. (SETUP.EXE) for Acrobat Reader. The ABCPY.INI file specifies the source and 
  227. destination locations for each file that is copied. Details for modifying this 
  228. file can be found in ABCPYDOC.INI which is in the same folder as the installer 
  229. (SETUP.EXE) for Acrobat Reader. An actual example of using ABCPY.INI can be 
  230. found in the Acrobat Reader + Search installer on this CD-ROM.
  231.  
  232. ABCPY.INI can also be used to specify some of the behavior of the Acrobat Reader
  233. installer such as which dialogs are displayed, the default destination directory,
  234. and the default "program group" and to enable the installer to launch another
  235. InstallShield script or another Windows application. It cannot be used to prevent
  236. the display of the Acrobat Reader Electronic End User License Agreement.
  237.  
  238. Macintosh -- The Acrobat Reader installers for Macintosh have the ability to 
  239. copy files that are external to the installer application and archives. This 
  240. is done by placing them in specially named folders, within the same folder as 
  241. the installer application. In this way, files can be automatically copied to 
  242. the Adobe Acrobat 3.0 folder on the destination hard drive. 
  243.  
  244. Standard folder names are:
  245.  
  246.     Plug-Ins
  247.     Optional Plug-Ins
  248.     Help
  249.  
  250. 1. Create a folder named (one of the choices above, exactly) at the same level 
  251. as the installer application in the "Reader" folder.
  252.  
  253. 2. Put the appropriate files or folders (yes, it's recursive) into the folder 
  254. you've created. Please put only the same type of files as the folder name. For 
  255. example, plug-ins in the Plug-Ins folder, PDF files in the Help folder, etc.
  256.  
  257. Note: The Installer checks to see if there is enough room on the target disk 
  258. before installing the files in these external folders, but the copy will fail 
  259. silently if there isn't enough room on the target disk. Also, the amount of 
  260. space taken up by the additional files is --not-- included in the required 
  261. space number in the Easy Install portion of the Installer.
  262.  
  263. Unix -- You can add your own plug-ins or documents to be installed by the 
  264. Acrobat Reader for Unix installer. To do so requires you to add one or more .tar
  265. files to the directory containing the installer components containing the 
  266. additional elements you would like to install.
  267.  
  268. Situation #1
  269. ============
  270. You have additional PDF files you would like installed into Reader/Help. Follow 
  271. these steps:
  272.  
  273. 1. Create a directory structure of Reader/Help and place your additional files 
  274.    in the Help directory. Do NOT use your Reader installation area because any  
  275.    files in the Help directory when you make your .tar file will overwrite files
  276.    of the same name that already exist in the installed image on the user's 
  277.    machine.
  278.  
  279.    For example, you've got a file, foo.pdf, you'd like to install into the Help 
  280.    directory. On your machine, set up a directory of Reader/Help/foo.pdf.
  281.  
  282.     mkdir Reader/Help
  283.     cp -p foo.pdf Reader/Help
  284.     
  285. 2. Change to the Reader directory.
  286.     
  287.     cd Reader
  288.  
  289. 3. Create a .tar file of that directory and name it CUSTOM.TAR. 
  290.  
  291.    The name CUSTOM.TAR should be used for any files to be installed that are 
  292.    platform-independent, such as help files. It is very important the files in 
  293.    the CUSTOM.TAR file are platform-independent.
  294.  
  295. 4. Place the CUSTOM.TAR file in the same directory with the other files of the 
  296.    installer.
  297.  
  298. Situation #2
  299. ============
  300. You want to install plug-ins for a specific platform.
  301.  
  302. 1. Create a directory for that particular platform and place the correct 
  303.    plug-in in the directory.
  304.  
  305.     mkdir Reader/<platformdirectory>/plug_ins
  306.     cp -p fooplug.api Reader/<platformdirectory>/plug_ins
  307.     
  308. The <platformdirectory> must be one of the following:
  309.  
  310.     hppahpux        For HP-UX
  311.     mipsirix        For IRIX
  312.     rs6000aix        For AIX
  313.     sparcsolaris    For Solaris
  314.     sparcsun        For SunOS
  315.     alphaosf        For Digital UNIX
  316.     intellinux        For LINUX
  317.     
  318. 2. Change to the Reader directory.
  319.  
  320.     cd Reader
  321.  
  322. 3. Create a .tar file of that directory and name it one of the following 
  323.    (appropriate for the platform):
  324.  
  325.     HPUXC.TAR        For HP-UX
  326.     IRIXC.TAR        For IRIX
  327.     AIXC.TAR        For AIX
  328.     SSOLC.TAR        For Solaris
  329.     SSUNC.TAR        For SunOS
  330.     AOSFC.TAR        For Digital UNIX
  331.     ILINXC.TAR        For Linux
  332.     
  333. 4. Place the .tar file in the same directory as the other files of the 
  334.    installer.

  338. =============================
  339. A special "Includes Adobe Acrobat" logo is available from Adobe for use when 
  340. distributing Acrobat Reader. See http://www.adobe.com/acrobat/acrodist.html for
